Dr Rommel Pilapil Sergio, counselling psychology expert and professor at Canadian University Dubai (CUD), is a man of his word. Believing that a healthy mind is incomplete without a healthy body, he has taken on the challenge to achieve a balanced and sustainable physical self-improvement.
"Eight months ago, I weighed 93kg, but now, I'm down to 78kg and has lost 15kg with good diet and sustained physical regimen," Sergio told Khaleej Times.
"My nutritionist and gym trainer gave me a list of food to eat. They call it "clean diet" as they say that 70 per cent of what we eat defines our body weight. Other than proper diet, I go to the gym four times a day," he added.
"I have many reasons to do workouts. First, as a mental health advocate (I do a lot of seminar-workshops/programmes on mental health and happiness), I certainly believe that I need to walk the talk. I always emphasise that physical health is as good as mental health," Sergio underlined.
"Other than this, I do not want my borderline diabetes to worsen. The proper diet and exercise are indeed perfect combination to obtain a healthy lifestyle," he added.
For Sergio, it takes awareness before one can really have a good mindset.
"Recognising that you need a change of lifestyle is imperative. Having a good mindset is the gateway towards appropriate action. It is very important to think of the long-term benefits of staying fit," he explained.
Sergio said that exercise boosts happy hormones such as serotonin and endorphin that will keep us stay positive and healthy. Aside from regular sweating sessions, proper nutrition should also be given priority because what we eat defines our physique.
Maintaining a healthy mind and a healthy body makes us a well-rounded individual.
