Over 118,000 wells have been documented in a first-of-its-kind Groundwater Atlas brought out following Abu Dhabi's Groundwater Wells Inventory completed in 2018. Up to 63 per cent of Abu Dhabi's total water use now comes from groundwater, according to the emirate's latest environmental report.
The recently-released Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) annual report for 2018 showed an increase in the amount of groundwater, which had greatly deteriorated over the past decades, and improvement in air quality as a result of the launch of the Abu Dhabi Emissions Inventory. The launch of a soil contamination monitoring programme for over 170 residential, agricultural and industrial sites has helped in understanding the emirate's soil quality and to address the challenges posed by harmful pollutants.
In his foreword to the report, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's representative in Al Dhafra Region and chairman of EAD, pointed out: "We will continue our efforts to improve air quality, protect our natural resources and enhance our biodiversity. We will also focus on stepping up environmental awareness in society to make a difference by adopting a more sustainable lifestyle. In doing so, we are confident that we will shape a better environment not just for our generation, but also for the generations that come after us."
