Huge quantities of fresh unprocessed tobacco were also seized.

Adil Ali Al Deek, Acting Head of the Environment and Health Section at the municipality, said the Asian owner of the grocery had been warned earlier also against selling illegal tobacco by the municipal inspectors after getting reports from the residents.

He said the inspectors yesterday raided his shop and found fresh leaves and packets of tobacco hidden behind food products.

Al Deek said another company supplying foodstuffs in Ras Al Khaimah was also slapped with a fine of Dh5,000 for tampering with the expiry dates on the products.

He said the municipal inspectors found a number of company products, including juices and other tinned foodstuff, bearing two expiry dates. The company was illegally extending the expiry dates of the products to three months.

According to Al Deek, the inspectors seized all the products that were in the company’s possession and also ordered the removal of all products bearing two expiry dates from the shops where the company had distributed these products.
