“To meet the requirements of health institutions for pharmaceutical products, the ministry has authorised purchase of various drugs at the cost of Dh15 million for different hospitals and health centres in the country,” Hassan Ahmed Al Alkim, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health told Khaleej Times yesterday.

The purchase decision followed reports submitted by the Central Pharmacy and Supplies Department to the Under-Secretaries Council at the ministry to determine the needs of hospitals and medical centres regarding pharmaceutical products, it has been learnt. The council yesterday discussed emergency requirements for hospitals and health institutions affiliated to the ministry, said Alkim.

He underlined that the council discussions were based on reports prepared by the Central Curative Medicine Department at the ministry that shed light on international criteria adopted to determine the requirements of medical institutions. He said standards globally embraced to specify needs of hospitals from medical supplies, were tabled during the council’s meeting.

Among other vital issues that were on the agenda of the council, were means and ways needed to beef up security at health institutions. The council has studied upgrading security systems adopted at government health institutions, said Alkim.

He said postgraduate studies and continuous training programmes for UAE national medical cadres, were also discussed by the council.

The budget required for operating and equipping the six new health institutions, which the ministry will inaugurate soon, was also tabled during yesterday’s meeting of the Council, said Alkim.
