Germany to issue new visa labels

DUBAI - The Consulate General of Federal Republic of Germany in Dubai will be issuing new visa labels with scanned photograph of the applicant from the beginning of the next month, a press release issued by the consulate stated. The move is aimed at eliminating possibilities of fake or falsified Schengen Visas and passports, and is presently being implemented by other European countries.

"The new visa system is a prevention, in general, against falsified passports or visas. We have had a lot of falsified Schengen Visas across Europe in the past, mainly from Asia," Ursula R of the German Consulate in Dubai, told Khaleej Times.

Explaining how the new type of visa would help rooting out the long-standing problem of fake or doctored documents, she said that the identification of the applicant will be clearer with the picture on the visa, and the record of the same would later help verify the identity of new applications with falsified documents. "If the authorities at the airport have a system to scan and store these visa labels, they could form a quickly available database for future reference and verification," Ms Ursula said, adding that even law enforcement (especially concentrating on suspected elements) would become easier to an extent. Replying to a question, she said that while the features of the visa are different now, the procedure for application and the processing of these applications will continue to be the same. "For applicants of specified nationalities, the time period of 8 to 10 days for processing of visa would continue." she added that the consulate usually processes these applications in eight days.
