Journalists from prominent, nationwide German media also came to Dubai on Emirates' invitation to cover the meeting for their readers.

The workshop, being held from Thursday till today, is an opportunity for travel agents and tour operators to meet and get first-hand, on-site information about Dubai's tourism infrastructure and development plans as well as to discuss current trends and potential opportunities in the local travel and tourism industry.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Emirates Group, said: "We are delighted with the positive response of FVW International and the German travel agents to our initiative. Emirates makes common cause with the Dubai government to promote our city as a world-class destination. This workshop will greatly contribute to making Dubai better known and appreciated in the vital German market - the largest European economy and third largest in the world."

The FVW International workshop was designed as a forum for Dubai tourism experts and operators to brainstorm new ideas about Dubai as a tourist and business traveller destination, with the German travel representatives.

Increased travellers' awareness of and interest in this up and coming destination is expected from the initiative.

The workshop also is an ideal platform for the German delegates to keep abreast of Dubai's newest facilities and tourism projects, which are being rolled out at a very rapid pace and require frequent updates to keep up with.

A series of presentations, excursions and working sessions were included in the programme.

This will give the visiting representatives an opportunity to learn about ongoing and planned marketing initiatives in Dubai and in the UAE as a whole, including actions targeted at the meetings and conventions business and travel groups.

The focus is on Dubai both as an airline hub and a stopover destination.

FVW International will be publishing a special section on the workshop in an upcoming issue to meet the growing popularity of Dubai - a destination that is only six hours flying time away from Germany. Last year, 171,000 people travelled from Germany to Dubai, an increase of 15.2 per cent over 2001.

Emirates operates twice daily flights to Dubai from both Frankfurt and Munich and a once daily non-stop service from DŸsseldorf.

The airline, an official sponsor of the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup in Germany, uses Dubai as a hub for its current 68 destinations in 48 countries on four continents.
