A postal ballot is the only method by which a German living abroad can cast vote. When asked if an online voting system is in place, Franz-Josef Dicken, Consul and Deputy Head of Mission, from the German Consulate in Dubai, said: "Online voting is not possible. However, you can download a registration form online. Once completed, this can be sent to Germany for a postal ballot to be sent to you."

The embassy in Abu Dhabi, and the Consulate in Dubai will also not accept completed postal ballots to be forwarded to relevant constituencies in Germany.

"No German Consulate or Embassy worldwide will accept postal ballots," Dicken said. "Only in exceptional cases will ballots be accepted. For example, to secure the delivery on time we would send it by diplomatic courier." However, he emphasised the fact that consideration would only be given to exceptional cases.

There are approximately 5,000 German expatriates in the UAE; over 3,000 in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and around 1,500 in Abu Dhabi. These figures also include children.
