Since its inception in 2005, the university has been operating under the RAK Free Zone.

Speaking to Khaleej Times recently, Zaid A. Ansari, Director, Institutional Effectiveness and Institutional Research of GMU RAK, said the licence has given the university more credibility and would attract more students, especially students from the other GCC countries.

He said GMU RAK is the first licensed branch campus in the UAE with real and direct connection to an American university.

"Many universities in the Middle East have the names of US institutions, but George Mason University is proud to be distinctive because on the Ras Al Khaimah campus, all letters of admission, transcripts, and diplomas are issued by George Mason University, USA," said Ansari.

"Students of the RAK campus who have good academic standing may be transferred to the US campus if the American immigration and visa procedures could be completed. There are no additional admission applications, hurdles, or hassles," he added.

According to Ansari, GMU RAK was established through a royal decree of the government of Ras Al Khaimah, under the patronage of Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

All GMU-RAK undergraduate courses are approved and consistent with the standards of George Mason University, USA, one of the largest and most diverse universities in Virginia.

Programmes offered

The RAK campus offers career-oriented undergraduate programmes in Economics, Business Administration (specialisation in International Business, Finance, Management or Marketing), Electronics and Communications Engineering (specialisation in Information Technology), Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources (specialisation in Tourism and Events Management), and Applied Computer Science.

In addition, GMU RAK has an English Language Programme (ELP) designed for students who need additional support to upgrade their English skills to meet the university entry requirements.

The university will introduce postgraduate programmes in Business Administration and Education Leadership by the end of 2009, said Ansari.
