At a Press conference at the police headquarters, Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, said that they arrested the five-member European gang, including a woman. The four men stabbed the two Europeans and escaped with two bags of $6 million.

He said the police managed to arrest the attackers despite the lack of information on them.

Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan said the police received information on March 27 that four men wearing masks attacked the two victims at the parking lot behind their building around midnight, snatched two bags of money and drove away in a black car. One of the victims was seriously injured while the other suffered minor injuries.

The seriously injured complainant failed to give a detailed description of the attackers but said the gang used a black car. He also named possible car brands.

The police formed special teams to seize the money before it could be sent abroad. The police found that the car belonged an Australian who was not in the country. The gang stole the Australian’s car from a parking lot. The police learnt that the two of the gang members had driven the car to a shopping mall and used another stolen car, a black Chrysler.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the police laid a trap and arrested the two while they were going in the stolen Chrysler. The police found Dh4,600 and $10,000 in their possession.

The police raided their flat in Jebel Ali and seized tools and keys used in their operations. Brig Al Mansouri said the police found out that the arrested thieves had a relationship with a Russian woman visitor staying in Sharjah. She entered the country after the gang members had committed the theft.

The woman was carefully chosen to transport the money from the UAE.

The woman was arrested and $21.000, Dh1,800 and 7300 Russian Roubles were seized from her. The police also found $1,027,660 stacked away in the false ceiling of her apartment.

A fourth Russian suspect was also arrested and Dh3,300 recovered from him. He confessed that the theft was planned by a fugitive Russian who was also arrested. He possessed the key of a Mercedes car. The police learnt that car belonged to a Russian who had left the UAE before the crime. Upon searching the car, the police found around $4 million — $2,090,100 in one bag and $2,400000 in the other. The money has been sent to the General Department of Forensic Science.
