The Anti-Narcotics Section at the Abu Dhabi Police’s Crime Investigation Department, according to a statement, received a tip-off about a major drug deal taking place between a young trafficker and potential buyers, including a 30-year-old college student.

After receiving the information, the Anti-Narcotics Section formed an undercover investigative team led by Lt Col Sultan Sawaheh Al Darmaki, head of the section.

According to Brigadier Hammad Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director of the Crime Investigation Department at the Abu Dhabi General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police, all the movements and communications of both the suspected buyers and the seller of the drugs were under surveillance from early December.

“The gang involved three people – a 22-year-old dealer, a 28-year-old buyer, and his partner, the student of Arab origin. All the three are unemployed. The drugs were smuggled into the country by road and were buried near a farming area on a main highway,” said Al Hammadi. He further explained: “As soon as we got the information, we formed the investigative team, put our actions together and traced and watched the entire saga closely and carefully.

We traced their calls, watched their every step and finally caught the gang on the New Year’s eve red-handed.

The gang was busted after their deal, which was closely monitored by the police team.

Al Darmaki said they were arrested in the car of the buyer when the deal was being finalised. “We also recovered two kilogrammes of the hashish from the vehicle and another pack of the drug was found in the residence of the student,” he said.

He said the drugs were smuggled into the country in a cargo vehicle.

They were packed in two big bags as cosmetic products of a well known international brand.

“They were in 94 triangle-shaped parcels labelled as cosmetic products. The 22-year-old smuggler, after hiding the drugs in a farm area, kept two kilogrammes as sample to negotiate with potential buyers,” Al Darmaki explained. — nissar@khaleejtimes.com
