Dr Hassan said that MoE would select 50 schools from all education zones for the project. Of these, 20 schools would be from primary level, 10 from preparatory level and 20 from secondary level. The project will be implemented from the next academic year 2007-08.

Under the Al Ghad Schools project, English language, mathematics and science would be taught from Grade I to the primary stage. The medium of instruction will be English.

The minister said gradually English medium will be introduced to Grades VI to XII by 2010-2011.

He added that the project would eliminate tuition programmes offered by the Ministry of Higher Education to students wanting to enter the university.

The minister stressed that priority will be given to extended school hours which would entail provision of healthy meals for students, and advanced laboratories and well-equipped classrooms. The project will also take into account the bilingual graduation system with Arabic as mother tongue and English as acquired language.

Dr Hassan also confirmed that there would be training programmes to enhance the skills of teachers and administrators.
