Rashid Hamdan, Director-General of Fujairah Municipality, said that the purpose of the plan is to develop and beautify streets.

"The project will go a long way in giving the city a facelift and at the same time it will increase the production of dates," he said.

Rashid Hamdan said: "The most suitable plant in this connection is found to be the date palm. It would serve both purposes. The areas on both sides of the streets would be planted with grass surrounded by the colour-interlock tiles on the pavements."

The Municipality is also planning to set up a modern and sophisticated irrigation network to water the planted areas in the city, he said. The sewage treatment network, the work on which has already started, would help in the setting up of modern irrigation network, he added.

Under the plan, all parks and lush green areas, over 6000 square meters, would be irrigated in the first phase, he said, adding that the Municipality is also geared up to set up and develop the existing parks after summer vacations.
