Awareness is the first step towards a 'healthy' change, and this Ramadan, Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) made an effort to bring about this healthy change among more than 1,000 blue-collar workers at the Transguard labour accommodation in Muhaisna, Dubai.
In line with the true spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, the workers were screened at a health camp organised by the medical wing of the association on Friday.
The camp was part of the Honour Labour initiative by the Community Development Authority (CDA), which aimed at creating health awareness and motivating blue-collar workers to adopt healthy habits.
The workers underwent basic health checks like blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and BMI, dental, ortho and eye checks. Along with free consultation, lectures on diabetes, hypertension, hand hygiene, smoking and oral hygiene were given by health professionals.
Dr Nighat Aftab, president of the medical wing, said that diabetes and hypertension remain undiagnosed in most of the labourers and they need regular screening for detection. Dr Aamerah Shah, general secretary of the medical wing, said that back and joint pains are the common health problems faced by labourers and they could be healed with some exercises.
Free Umrah trip for workers
Umrah packages were offered for labourers in addition to gifts and Iftar meals. Gift hampers from IFFCO were also distributed.
Tahir Zaidi, joint secretary of the association, highlighted the importance of these health camps. He also hoped to start the construction of Pakistan Medical Centre soon, which will serve as a non-profit facility for the community.
Dr Omar Al Muthanna, CEO of the CDA who was the chief guest on the occasion, praised the initiatives taken by the association towards community welfare.
First Lieutenant Rashid Nasser Ali from the Dubai Police conducted a lecture on the rights of blue collar workers and how they can be more aware about their rights.
