The World Hypertension Day was observed in the UAE in an effort to promote hypertension prevention and control, according to the Regional Alliance for Hypertension Awareness (RAHA) formed here recently.

Dr VJ Sebastian, Specialist Cardiologist, Welcare Hospital, said, “Blood pressure should be checked at least twice a year, if not more often, but people are simply not doing this. Patients seldom notice symptoms until the damage is already done. We all know sedentary lifestyles, obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes are among the factors that lead to high blood pressure, but I don't believe people are aware of how serious it can actually be and the need to keep their blood pressure under control. I hope that this awareness initiative will encourage the public to take a more active role in their fight against this chronic, and often fatal, disease.”

Experts say that up to 30 per cent of the UAE population is at risk of heart attack due to undiagnosed hypertension.
