Focus on industrial safety needed

THE massive fire in a warehouse for tyres in Sharjah Industrial Area brings us back to the issue of industrial safety measures, lack of proper adherence to which seems to be wreaking havoc in the country every now and then. Sharjah alone has had any number of fire accidents in recent times, particularly in industrial firms.

The fact that Sharjah Industrial Area is not very far from residential localities adds to the gravity of the situation. Ironically, the committee looking into fires in Sharjah Industrial Area was in session when the irrepressible flames devoured the warehouse.

The committee was formed to suggest ways to reduce fire accidents and curb various kinds of violations which ultimately result in accidents.

The suggestion to move the industrial area to Al Sajah area, we think, is a wise one. For the time being, a full fire unit should be deployed at the industrial area, ready to intervene at once in case of an emergency.
