Fishermen in dire straits

FISHERMEN in the UAE nowadays are in dire straits. We observed that the beaches of the emirates are full of the boats of fishermen, specially after the hike in the prices of diesel for the second time within two months.

Fish forms the staple diet of very many people across the world — a cheap and healthy food item. But after the incredible rise in the prices of fuel, who knows how long that maybe the case.

Fishing played a very important role in supporting the economy of the country. Therefore, we call upon fishermen and the authorities concerned to work and cooperate with each other in finding a solution to the crisis.

The fishing sector, to be frank, is very vital, and any support to the UAE fishermen will strengthen the nation’s economy, and not lead the citizens to look for fish in other places outside the country.

Therefore, the fishing community should help through the crisis by asking for subsidy from the government, especially over the prices of fuel. Also, this sector needs to be nationalised in order to help it end the domination of other nationalities.

We are sure that the UAE government — which always supports its citizens — will never disappoint the fishermen, study their problems, and take a step in the right direction.
