The fire which broke out at 12.45pm, spread to the adjacent labour camps but a timely alert that was followed by a quick evacuation, saw to it that none of the workers were injured.

Raw materials like sponge, logs, cartons, and furniture were gutted.

The Sharjah Civil Defence and police units rushed to the site following a call received by the Sharjah Police Operations Room and started to evacuate the area. It took over two and half hours to douse the flames.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a top official of the Civil Defence said, “Most of the warehouses and the company owners in the industrial area do not comply with the safety rules and regulations.

“This negligence usually leads to huge losses and even casualties. Sometimes it can be tragic.” He pointed out that the inspectors of the emergency inspection committee formed by the Sharjah Police only a week ago, had inspected the Al Mayan Furniture Factory complex. They had instructed the management to add more fire extinguishers to enhance the fire protection system.
