The amount of the fine will be decided as per the Cabinet’s decision, he added.

“Three months were enough for the amnesty seekers to approach the DNRD to benefit from the scheme. A grace period will be granted only to those people who have already completed the formalities but could not leave the UAE because of reasons like unavailablity of air-tickets etc.,” he said.

The official added: “We provided all facilities to the amnesty seekers and even extended the working hours at the centres, including Saturdays. We did not want to give them any excuse for not stepping forward to complete the formalities to either regularise their status or leave the UAE.”

Meanwhile, yesterday (Wednesday), the day allocated for the nationals of Bangladesh, Arab and African countries, Russia and some Eastern European countries, the rush at the Follow-up and Investigation Section (FIS) in Jumeirah was smaller compared to the one witnessed on Tuesday.

However, a couple of cases of fainting were again reported due to the heat. The victims were quickly attended to.

A counter staff at the FIS, said: “There are still a few days left before the amnesty deadline ends. We are trying very hard to complete as many formalities as possible each day. We have been organising awareness campaigns since the beginning of the amnesty urging illegals to step forward and regularise their status in time.”
