Fine for molestation

RAS AL KHAIMAH — The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court yesterday sentenced Mohammed Ahmed, a UAE national, to a one-month suspended imprisonment besides slapping him with a fine of Dh2,000 for molesting a woman, also a UAE national. The court also fined him an additional Dh1,000 for attacking the woman. The defendant had pleaded not guilty, claiming that he was only trying to defend himself from the enraged woman, her mother and two other women.

The court, however, said that such an immoral act was in total defiance of UAE's deeply religious and social values. It said that such acts should be fought against and perpetrators meted out severe punishment.

The final ruling came after extensive investigation and included evidence from footage from the CCTV system in the shopping mall where the molestation took place.

The case dates back to last week. The man was allegedly following the group of women inside the shopping mall for a considerable time. He is then said to have approached the plaintiff and pinched her. The woman reacted, and aided by her mother and friends, beat up the man with shoes. The man retaliated with a slap on the woman's face. Intervention by the mall security had little effect. Finally, it was left to a police patrol to pacify and control the four livid women, and save the man from their combined fury.
