His wife, a 38-year-old Indian, her 22-year-old son from an earlier marriage and her 20-year-old sister died in what the police believe was a suicide pact.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation of Dubai Police, said the Indian businessman was referred on Thursday on the charge of attempted suicide. The Public Prosecution is investigating further and will frame the final charge later.

“A letter was found by police, which said they had financial problems,” Al Mansouri said. The man ran his own garments shop, Alnakhora, in the building where the suicides occurred.

A salesman at the store said the staff did not know of any financial trouble plaguing the man or the business. “He was a good boss — he always paid our salaries on time - even last month’s,” he said. “He looked normal on that day.”

He told the police that he tried to hang himself, but fell from the ceiling-fan bracket, and only sufferedminor injuries.

A watchman in the building told Khaleej Times that the husband, who was from Mumbai, was a nice man. “He greeted me an hour before the incident,” he said. “However, after half-an-hour, he came and said that his family members had hanged themselves.”

The watchman informed police of the accident. Police found their bodies at the building, opposite the Lulu Supermarket in Karama.

“He was a good Muslim,” the watchman said. “His wife only converted to Islam a week ago.”

The bodies have been sent to the General Department of Forensic Medicine for autopsies. Evidence has also been collected by police.
