Philippine Consul General Benito B. Valeriano has appealed to all Filipino expatriates in Dubai and the Northern Emirates to abstain from heavy drinking sessions as it is prohibited in the UAE.

The appeal came following the arrest and conviction of two Filipino workers in Sharjah caught drinking outside their accommodation in Sharjah.

The duo, whose names have been withheld, have been sentenced to two months jail and will be deported.

Valeriano said this habit of going into drinking sprees, especially on birthdays and other special occasions must be cut as it is considered a crime in this country.

“I know that it is your way of enjoyment, but it is difficult for you to go against UAE laws against drunkenness. If arrested for such a crime, there are dire consequences not only on the person but on his employment as he can be deported after serving jail,” the consul general said.

He said anyone violating this UAE law is putting his career and his family in a difficult situation.lily@khaleejtimes.com
