The four-hour event was organised by the Filipino Press Club in Dubai ahead of the 108th Philippine Independence Day annual celebrations in June.

The participating schools for the writing contest organised on the theme "What does Philippine independence mean to you?" included United International Private School (UIPS), St Mary's School, Westminster School and New Filipino Private School (NFPS) in Sharjah.

The event enjoyed the support of UAE Exchange, Al Naddaf Tourism and Cargo, Tipanan Restaurant, Baitong Restaurant and CM Supermarket, Mediacom and The Filipino Channel.

Gian Zapata of the NFPS walked away with the grand prize (8mb MP3 player and trophy) for his exceptional piece titled "Kalayaan (Freedom) for the Kabataan (Youth)" in the essay-writing category.

Carmela Ticzon (UIPS) and Ma. Erika Paulyn Magnayon (NFPS) clinched the second and third top slots, respectively. The fourth to sixth place winners in this category were Fayree M. Castro (UIPS), John Aldrin Manaois (UIPS), and Dean Chester Arriola (UIPS). Nico Almares of NFPS took home a souped-up MP3 player after besting 13 other contestants who took part in the painting category.

The winning essays and paintings will be featured in "Kalayaan," a souvenir programme to be issued by the Philippine Consulate in Dubai on the occasion of Philippine independence celebrations here on June 12. FPC was tasked to help produce the souvenir programme. A big Filipino community gathering celebrating the occasion will be held on June 16, Friday, at the Al Nasr Leisureland, Dubai.
