The rain harvest in 2010 saw more water being accumulated and the salts in the soil reduced, leading to better agricultural yields in the country. A top official at the ministry office in Dubai said the rains during the past few days did not last long enough to contribute to the dam levels.

“The other reason that stopped the accumulation of water was because the showers fell on desert areas and not the mountain areas,” he said.

The report pointed out that the quantities of water accumulated in the lakes, 20 dams and barrier dams in the Eastern Region was estimated to be 4,538,188 cubic metres, and the estimated amount of water in the lakes, 37 dams and barrier dams in the Central Region with 3,971,437 cubic metres.

The dams and lakes in the Northern Region were watersheds for 5.806 million cubic metres water accumulation. afkar@khalejtimes.com
