Explosive joke boomerangs

FUJAIRAH - This was one joke which did not produce an explosion of laughter. The Court of Fujairah at least didn't see anything funny when told that the three men, arraigned before it, had committed an act of throwing explosive material on a main road in the Masafi area only as a joke.

On the contrary, the court took a grim view. It sent UAE national Mussa Salmeen Saeed and Omani nationals Ahmed Saeed Rashed and Ibrahim Abdullah Al Shehi to jail. Mussa Salmeen has been sentenced to 31 months behind bars while Rashed and Shehi have been sentenced to three months each in jail.

In addition, the trio were also found to be carrying pornographic films in the car that they were travelling in.

The court was told that the three men were in a car in the area of Masafi, when one of them hurled something on to the road which exploded with a loud and terrifying noise, scaring the daylights out of passers-by. The police rushed to the spot and stopped the car. A search revealed the pornographic movies. The three men in the car said that they had thrown the explosive only as a joke, with the intention to scare people.

The police found evidence of the kind of explosive used right there on the road. All three men were arrested and referred to the prosecutor on charges of possessing explosives without a licence, and carrying pornographic movies.
