The participants also suggested that the slogan of 'sustainable development' should be adopted to encounter the challenges facing natural resources in Arab countries, namely water and energy and protect the environment from pollution.
Developing of environment-friendly technologies and clean production techniques in line with political, economical and scientific programmes of the UAE, namely the implementation of clean-production projects, was also recommended by the experts who took part in the seminar.
They also proposed compiling databases on human resources operating in the field of environment in order to facilitate coordination among concerned authorities for chalking out development projects that enhance sustainable development.
The participants also said that constant interaction should be encouraged with international organisations such as the UNDP, to support joint projects with the AUST network and its counterparts in the UAE and other AGCC countries.
The stressed the need for conducting national awareness campaigns and training courses on rationalisation of consumption of energy and water and preservation of environment.
The participants also recommended that more attention should be paid to water issues in the UAE, particularly desalination processes and national relevant industries utilising solar energy, sweet waters and underground waters.
They also urged major international oil and pharmaceutical companies to support research and studies on water, energy and environment, so as to help preventing depletion of these sources and avoiding further environment pollution.
The participants also called for a greater role of media to increase public awareness on the importance of environment protection and development and recommended that innovative and creative thoughts in this domain should be inspired. The two-day seminar focused on the legal vacuum with regard to water resources in the Arab world as being the potential source of conflict in the region.
