According to Ashenafi Abunie, a representative of Ethiopian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world that follows the Julian calendar as opposed to the Gregorian calendar, which observes January 1 as the first day of the New Year.

He pointed out that although most Ethiopians in the UAE were domestic workers, there was a good percentage of engineers and semi-skilled workers among them, employed in companies like Adnoc, ADWEA, Gamco as well as some cargo agents.

"It is a pity that although Ethiopia is such a beautiful and fertile country - we actually have about 1000 lakes and mountains and lead other African countries in cattle-rearing - the common perception is that we are suffering from drought and devastation on the one hand, and war on the other," Mr Abunie said.

He added that the only thing the country lacked that stood in the way of its development was funding, and urged investors from the UAE to take a trip to the country, which has often been called the "bread basket of Africa", and see for themselves its great potential, rather than follow the media-generated perceptions. He pointed out that the new government's privatisation policy had attracted investors in good number.

He noted that Semahgne was a traditional Ethiopian singer with a huge following in his home country.
