According to Majid Al Mansoury, Secretary-General of the Agency, the restructuring comes in accordance with a decision taken by the Board of Directors at its last meeting.

"Nationalisation is one of the important elements in this strategy, as there is a plan in cooperation with Zayed

University to develop the performance of the Agency's youth, so as to be able to handle higher administrative positions," Mansoury told Khaleej Times.

He pointed out the implementation of the nationalisation process in the Agency is resulting in a 10 per cent rise every year and the local staff in the outfit now account for 35 per cent of the workforce.

The Agency will work on attracting the graduates who studied abroad, in addition to graduates from the University of Sharjah and Emirates University, who graduated in environment related courses, he added.

The secretary-general announced that all institutions and companies will incorporate environmental programmes in their activities such as the Abu Dhabi International Airport which has plans to establish its own Environment Department that will monitor all its projects, in addition to Abu Dhabi Industrial City.

He clarified that under the new strategy, the role of the Agency will be to monitor and observe while drafting joint policies and focusing on the issue of continuous development, in addition to working on the partnership between the Agency and all sectors. "This means that the role of the Agency will be shifted to monitoring and establishing true partnership with all establishments," he added.

Regarding the issue of cooperation with International Organisations such as FAO, Mansoury said that there was a plan for cooperation with FAO regarding forests and the best systems to manage and develop them, in addition to re-habilitation of the wildlife sanctuaries.

He also assured that all investment projects are under the observation of the Environmental Agency, and that around 90 per cent of these investment companies are complying with the environmental conditions set by the Agency.

Mansoury said that the budget of the Agency had multiplied since 1999, where it was Dh24 million and now it had reached Dh250 million to cover its wide-ranging activities.

On the issue of bird flu, he said an observation plan was on track. "The second mock drill will take place shortly. The exercise will focus on the detection of infected cases in a residential area, which is the scenario we are working on for now," he added.

He added that there is a Dh2 million fund for conducting a study about Crises Management in Abu Dhabi, which will witness the participation of all sectors.
