Emirates flight returns after false alarm

DUBAI — An Emirates flight from Munich to Dubai was forced to return to the Munich International Airport 20 minutes after taking off due to a smoke warning in its cargo hold on Wednesday.

The flight, EK052, left the German city 16 hours and 20 minutes behind schedule after safety check procedures had been carried out.

"Extinguishers in the hold were immediately activated. Upon landing, airport fire crew found no evidence of fire in the hold," an Emirates spokesperson said.

The passengers went through the usual disembarking process and were lodged overnight in hotels as the aircraft was checked and the fire extinguishers were replaced, the spokesperson added.
