"The magnetic fields, which result from high voltage electric wires and electronic apparatuses can negatively affect the position of the human cells," Dr Maryaim Hassan Al Shanasi, a professor at Sharjah University said in a working paper which she presented in a symposium on combating environmental crimes organised by the Ministry of Interior held recently in Abu Dhabi.

Scientific studies, she said, proved that an atmosphere full of magnetic fields can cause reduction in the number of sperm in males or may even lead to men's infertility.

"As for women, such magnetic fields make the monthly period unstable and in some cases abortion may occur," she said. "If a pregnant woman is exposed to the sounds of a jet plane, this may lead to her baby's death. Sound of a massive explosion can cause brain bleeding and deafness. High sounds also produce sharp drop in blood circulation and troubles in the stomach," she warned.

Loud sounds that exceed 90 decibel can cause hearing deficiency, if exposed to them for a long time, but if they exceed 115 decibel, it becomes more dangerous and may cause deafness. The maximum bearable sound is 85 decibel.

Scientific studies, she said, highlighted that mobile phones with GSM system and frequencies exceeding 950 Hertz can affect brain-cells after 15 minutes of speaking on the phone.
