The source said OK (70) used to bring a large quantity of ‘kat’ from Yemen, distribute and sell it to a large number of Arabs who used it for chewing in lieu of alcohol and drugs.

The police raided the house of OK where they found a large quantity of kat stored. The raid took place after the investigation officer received a tip-off from people concerned about public health.

During the interrogation, the UAE national said he did not know ‘kat’ was illegal in the country and admitted that he distributed and sold a large quantity of the narcotic to many people in the emirate. The case was referred to public persecution for trial. The police said people should know that just because kat is legal in Yemen, it does not automatically mean it’s legal in the UAE too.
