People in the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries have been facing problems connecting to the Internet for the past three days due to the breakages in the three submarine cables that link Europe and the Middle East.

Even though both Etisalat and du pressed into alternative options by re-routing the data and voice traffic, businesses and internet users on Sunday said they were still affected by the Internet slowdown and faulty telephone connections.

“We have been receiving purchase orders through online trading and the connection has been very slow. It’s difficult to place and receive orders at this speed,” said Haroon Rasheed, a trader in Deira.

“The Internet connection in my office was very slow and it affects the communication. We could not open the websites at times and when it was opening it took ages,” said an employee in a law firm in Shaikh Zayed Road who wished not to be named.

“I had a similar problem at my home in Dubai Marina but its difficult to work in a situation like this as we do all the communication through the Internet,” she said.

Internet cafe owners said the connection has been slow since Friday but the traffic improved on Sunday.

A spokesman of du said it re-routed data and international voice traffic east through alternative cable systems through the Far East and western US.

“We put all our efforts to restore the continuity of connections by re-routing the data. The situation is improving and the performance will be normal soon,” the spokesman said.

Etisalat said it re-directed some of its traffic through South Asia and the connectivity will become normal soon.

Meanwhile, agencies reported that other Middle Eastern countries had also taken measures to restore the internet traffic by re-routing traffic through the Indian Ocean cables.

France Telecom SA sent a maintenance ship to repair three severed undersea cables. The maintenance ship, carrying 20km of cable, is expected to arrive at the site of the damage today.

The maintenance work is expected to take a week. Friday’s cut was the second large-scale Internet outage in the Middle East. with inputs from agencies
