‘We have to introduce a new educational system so as to improve this important sector.” Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Khalood Ghreeb Al Mansouiri, Head of the English Language Teaching Programme (ELTP) of the RAK-based Al Itthad University, said: “The old teaching methods are no longer viable in an age characterised by a fast-paced life and a boom in information technology.

“We have to adopt new methods of teaching like Independent Learning, Learners’ Autonomy, and Long-Life Learning.

She added. “We have to care for high achievers as well as slow learners. The curriculum should not be the only means of teaching and we have to introduce new technological means like the Internet.

“Students should be taught on how to use it more than for what it is used.”

Al Mansouiri also highlighted the importance of thrashing out new systems of assessment. “Examinations should not be the only means of assessment in our schools.”

On a question about the rising trend among national families to shift their sons and daughters from government schools to private schools on the ground that the former have no good system of teaching the English language, she said: “I disagree with this, because teachers of English language are doing their best, but the real problem is in the whole educational system, because it prepares students for exams and not for life,” she added.

The RAK Educational Zone (REZ) has recently estimated that more than 80 national students have shifted from government schools to private schools, particularly Indian schools.
