The award, which was presented during the ‘GISWORK 2007’ event in Dubai, is offered to organisations that foster innovation in GIS.

EAD has been using these systems for the past seven years in conserving and protecting Abu Dhabi’s environment. In 2000, the agency established a comprehensive GIS-based environmental database, with more than 30 governmental institutions coming together.

The EAD was also chosen in 2002 by the UAE government to lead the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative. As a result, the agency developed the “First State of the Environment” report on the Abu Dhabi emirate.

The report studied the impacts of groundwater depletion and urban development on marine life, air and water pollution, waste management and habitat degradation.

The GIS solutions developed by EAD were also used to track falcons, houbara bustards, turtles and flamingoes, in order to study their habitats.
