It said men comprised 73 percent of the total, but did not give a breakdown of nationals and expatriates living in Dubai, a member of the seven-strong oil-rich United Arab Emirates.

Previous figures released more than a year ago put the population of the business and tourism hub at 1.086 million.

Results of a national census published at the end of July showed that the total UAE population had grown in a decade from 2.4 million to 4.1 million, four-fifths of them foreigners.

The latest population figure included 824,921 UAE citizens.

No breakdown by nationality of foreign residents, who make up 78.1 percent of the total population, was provided.

South Asians -- mainly Bangladeshis, Indians, Pakistanis, Filipinos and Sri Lankans -- are estimated to make up some 50 percent of expatriates in the emirate. Between 1.2 million and 1.3 million Indians work in the private sector, according to official figures.

The remaining foreign residents are from other Asian, Arab, Western and African nationalities.
