The contract involves the designing and building of the first 9.5km phase of Al Sufouh Tram, which will also be the world’s first tram network to use platform screen doors fully aligned with the train’s door opening and closing mechanism.

Abdul Majid Al Khaja, CEO of the RTA Rail Agency, said on Saturday that the Dh3.188-billion contract is for designing and constructing 13 stations and a depot.

The project, he said, will have multi-mode interchange stations along the Red Line, in areas like the Mall of the Emirates, Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers. “The first phase is scheduled to be completed and operations started by April 11, 2011.”

The proposed Al Sofouh Tram will run from Dubai Marina/Jumeirah Beach Residence via Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village to Madinat Jumeirah, Mall of the Emirates and Burj Al Arab as well as other projects under planning phase such as Jumeirah Hills.
