Dubai to promote eco-friendly buildings

DUBAI — With Dubai generating more than 3.5 million tonnes of general wastes in 2007 and the figure expected to rise, the formation of the Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) will pave the way for eco-friendly buildings and offices in the near future, said a senior official of the Dubai Municipality.

Speaking at the opening of the Recycling Middle East Conference yesterday, Abdullah Rafia, Assistant Director-General for Environmental and Public Affairs in the municipality, stated, "The civic body is taking a lot of steps towards the promotion of Green Buildings and recycling aimed at reducing the pollution levels.

"Among the initiatives already in place is the new law on green construction and the formation of the Emirates Green Building Council, which will lead to more eco-friendly buildings and offices," said Rafia.

The two-day conference has been organised by the Dubai Municipality at Al Murooj Rotana Hotel and Suites.
