For the first time in Dubai's theatre history, a fully professional musical is coming to town, said Philippe Duquenoy, Production Director, Streetwise Fringe Theatre, yesterday.

There will be five daily shows from May 25 till May 29 at the Crowne Plaza Dubai's Emirates Auditorium. Doors open at 7.30pm and the show starts at 8pm.

"This will be our biggest show in Dubai. It will be the first time that Dubai has had a professional musical. It's all about guys who meet up at a funeral of their music teacher where they decide to form a band because the teacher's last wish was for his boys to shake off their humdrum lifestyles and reach for the stars," he said. Mr Duquenoy said that the group, comprising members who had lead roles in productions in the UK, had been touring the country and had finished their show in Wales.

Written and directed by Harry Connolly, Three Steps to Heaven is a comedy about the desire for a change and having the courage to make fantasy a reality. The main characters - Bud, Jag, Fly, Chip, Big Baz and Des - have hit the mid-life crisis and desperately want to escape the present and discover the destinies by forming the ultimate touring band.

"The show will not be a rock musical and a lot of it is done acapella. It starts with an acapella version and ends with a first gig in a working man's club," he said.

The whole show will have two acts, 71 minutes each, which culminates in a 10 to 15-minute musical performance. Compact Theatre Productions is renowned for its energy, comedy and musical vitality. Compact's earlier works include plays, such as Muscle by Harry Connolly and Steve Dolton, and One Big Blow by John Burrows. Tickets are priced at Dh125 and Dh100.
