A raffle ticket taken by an Indian expat in Dubai in his cook's name struck a luxury vehicle, the sale of which will help the latter repay a loan he had taken back in India.
Praveen Manghnani from Mumbai explained: "My cook and driver is from the Indian city of Lucknow. During the last monsoon season in August 2018, the roof of his house fell through. To fix it, he took a loan of Rs400,000 at a very high interest rate. He told me about this only in January, so I agreed to give him an interest-free loan to help him save some money.
"Later that day, we were driving somewhere and stopped to get petrol. While we were there, I decided to buy a Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) Infinity raffle ticket in his name for some good luck. The next day, he got a phone call telling him he'd won. This incredible prize was nearly the exact equivalent to the loan he had taken. It was a miracle!"
During the 24th edition of the DSF, several people's lives have changed for the better, thanks to their wins.
In the daily gold draw from Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG), shoppers Anish Nadarajan, Amit Pandit, Mohammed Lokman Hakim and Eneesha Shamgith won 250g of gold.
Anish Nadarajan, a father of two from India, said he'd use the money from his win to give a "great education" to his children. Amit Pandit, also from India, said he'd gift the gold coin to his daughter.
Mohammed Lokman Hakim from Bangladesh said he will use his gold to "help family, colleagues and neighbours in Dubai and abroad".
Eneesha Shamgith, a mother from India, said: "We've put the gold in our daughter's name as an investment for her future."
