Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) and President of the Dubai Press Club (DPC), on Wednesday received Dr. Fawzi Al Ghweil, Director of Technical Administration of the Arab League's Council of Arab Information Ministers at the DPC headquarters. The meeting formed part of a series of discussions between Dubai Press Club and the Secretariat General of the Arab League on the preparations for the year-long celebrations planned next year to mark Dubai's selection as 'Capital of Arab Media for 2020'.

During the meeting, attended by Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi, Director General of Watani Al Emarat Foundation, and Salem Belyouha, Acting Director of Dubai Press Club, Al Marri expressed her appreciation for the keen interest shown by the Secretariat General of the Arab League to be part of the preparations to celebrate Dubai's recognition as the Capital of Arab Media for 2020.

Al Marri further said that Dubai's selection encourages the city to further accelerate growth in this vital sector and launch more initiatives to support the media industry's development. Furthermore, it will pave the way for greater collaboration and progress in the Arab world in line with the vision of the leadership.

Al Ghweil praised the ideas, initiatives and programmes proposed for the year-long celebrations, noting that they will significantly contribute to the development of the Arab media sector.

Highlighting the example set by the UAE and Dubai in attracting Arab and international media institutions to establish their headquarters in the country, Al Ghweil said the creation of Dubai Media City provided an advanced infrastructure and supportive environment for media businesses to operate out of Dubai.

Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi stressed that the Secretariat General of the Arab League, represented by the Council of Arab Information Ministers, is closely coordinating with DPC to organise a grand celebration.

Al Falasi added that the UAE has launched several media initiatives aimed at developing the media industry and stimulating creativity and excellence in its various sectors.

Logo Design Contest

During the meeting, the Dubai Press Club (DPC) presented the results of the design contest for the 'Dubai, Capital of Arab Media for 2020' logo, which was announced on October 20. The region-wide competition invited designers to submit a unique logo design that encapsulates Dubai's creative spirit and its status as a regional media hub. The final evaluation of the submissions concluded today. The competition attracted a total of 79 entries and 106 designs from across 17 countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan and Tunisia.

A panel of judges conducted several rounds of evaluation and screening after the submission deadline ended on November 3, 2019. The judging committee will soon announce the winning entry, which will receive a cash prize of Dh5,000.

The winning design will become the official emblem for 'Dubai, Capital of Arab Media for 2020' and will be used across all events and initiatives to be organised throughout 2020.

Dubai's Selection

Dubai was selected as the 'Capital of Arab Media for 2020' by the Council of Arab Information Ministers in July this year. Following the selection, DPC announced plans to celebrate the recognition with year-long activities and initiatives that will promote Dubai's status as the capital of Arab Media and further enhance its profile as a leading regional and global media hub.

Dubai's selection as the 'Capital of Arab Media for 2020' by the Council of Arab Information Ministers crowns two decades of Dubai's leadership in driving regional media industry growth during which it emerged as one of the world's leading media hubs. At the forefront of this growth is the TECOM Group's media clusters, Dubai Media City (DMC), Dubai Studio City (DSC) and Dubai Production City (DPC), which together represent the largest hub for media companies in the region. Dubai Press Club, another major player in the growth of the region's media industry, has launched several initiatives to foster industry excellence and dialogue.  Its major initiatives include the Arab Media Forum (AMF), the region's largest media gathering; the Arab Journalism Award (AJA); the Emirates Media Forum (EMF); the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit (ASMIS); and the Arab Media Outlook, an extensive reference on the region's media.
