Dubai is booming

DUBAI - Dubai International Airport continued with a double digit growth for 2003. A total of 18.06 million passengers passed through the airport, registering a growth of 13 per cent over the 15.9 million in 2002.

Cargo movement registered a 21.5 per cent growth with total freight movement of 939,966 tonnes in 2003 as compared to 784,996.93 tonnes in 2002. Aircraft movement also showed a growth of 12.5 per cent with 168,511 movements as compared to 149,844 movements in 2002. On December 2, the air traffic control (ATC) registered its 200,000th approach movement in 2003, setting a new record. On December 10, the ATC recorded the highest daily movement of 602. Peak passenger movement was in January with 1.56 million registering the highest growth in a single month of 26 per cent; this followed the second highest growth in February with 1.4 million passengers and 20 per cent growth. Average passenger movement per day registered at 56,273, which shows a 19 per cent increase over 2002 figures.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates group, said: "Dubai is now the business and leisure destination of the region. We have attracted new airlines and can truly be regarded as a hub with 105 airlines."

Arriving passengers at the Dubai International airport registered a 15 per cent growth while departing passengers registered a 15.5 per cent growth in 2003. Transit passengers totalled 887,278, which is a decline of 17.4 per cent.
