Dubai — The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has organised a Ramadan tent for the elderly at a family gathering centre (rehab centre for the elderly) for the second consecutive year.

Dr Salwa Al Suwaidi, geriatrician and director of the centre, said: “Through such community initiatives we educate people about the importance of active ageing, we encourage them to undertake health screening programmes regularly and lead an active life so that they can prolong ageing process and age with lesser health complications. In addition to heath awareness and education, there will be many activities for the elderly at the Ramadan tent.”

Al Suwaidi said in cooperation with Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai (IACAD), the centre will hold religious lectures after the Isha (night) prayers.

DHA health professionals will also carry out health screening and nutritionists will advise patients on healthy eating during Ramadan.

For the elderly patients, the centre has arranged simple physiotherapy exercises at the Ramadan tent as well as activities such as chess and carom which help in development of cognitive skills. The tent is open for all and Al Suwaidi said people who wish to greet the elderly during this holy month are welcome to visit the family gather centre.
