“The move shows the President’s vision for development of all public facilities that will contribute to promotion of internal tourism," said Minister of Public Works Shaikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan.

“The highway will also stimulate economic and tourist growth between the east and west coast.”

He said that the new expansion would cost Dh250 million out of a total Dh1.25 billion project.

“It will open up new opportunities for building commercial, residential, industrial and tourism complexes in the areas through which it will pass,” he added

The 45-km strategic highway will start from the Sharjah-Kalba highway stretching through the Hajer mountains and Asfani up to Fujairah city.

The highway will be built to the highest international standards with a speed limit of 120 kmph. It will significantly cut the travel time between the east and west coasts. Works includes fly-overs, bridges, side protective barriers, lighting and underpasses.
