The results for this year's round of the award were approved yesterday by Dr Ali Abdulaziz Al Sharhan, Minister of Education and Youth and Chairman of the award's Board of Trustees, and were jointly announced at a Press conference by Dr Jamal Al Mohairi, Under-Secretary to the Ministry of Education and Youth (MoEY), Secretary-General of the board along with Dr Khalifa Al Suwaidi, board member and general coordinator of the central judiciary panels of the award.
The winners will be awarded prizes at a ceremony to be held on March 26 at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Praising the efforts of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE's Minister of Finance and Industry, Dr Al Mohairi and Dr Al Suwaidi said that the award had enriched the educational field and has become a cultural and educational landmark since it has contributed to motivating academics and improving the educational system in the country.
Dr Mohairi noted that the Dubai Educational Zone bagged the first position with 22 per cent of winners, Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone was ranked second with 17.1 per cent of winners, and Sharjah Educational Zone was placed third with 14.1 per cent.
He added that the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone was placed fourth with 10.6 per cent of winners, the Ajman Educational Zone came fifth with 4.5 per cent, the Fujairah Educational zone was sixth with 4.3 per cent, and the Al Ain Educational Zone was positioned seventh with 3.2 per cent.
This year, there were 122 prizes of which 46 were withheld including the prizes in the categories of the extraordinarily distinguished teacher, the best scientific invention, the distinguished central department. This was attributed to the poor standards of entries in these categories, the officials said.
Also withheld was the the distinguished educational zone prize since none of the educational zones applied for the award this year
The Dubai Educational Zone got the lion share of prizes as it won 42 awards , Dr Suwaidi said.
Private schools bagged a large number of awards in this round with one particular school namely Dubai National Private Schools winning 14 awards alone out of 122 in all categories.
Dr Suwaidi unveiled the new plans at the conference for the forthcoming rounds of the award such as issuing certificates of distinction to those who are good but could not win due to the tough competition, in addition to publishing a booklet that serves as a guide for distinction and nomination for the award.
"We plan to review the application formats and have them ready before the end of this current academic year," Dr Suwaidi said, disclosing that the Board of Trustees will organise a forum bringing together the winners in the previous cycles of the award and the nominees for the future cycles to exchange experiences and opinion. Among the new projects on the agenda, is the launch of a special programme for explaining the nomination formats and train candidates on filling them up.
