Subscribers on the du network will now have time until 17 January 2013 to register their SIM-cards. A spokesperson from du said: “In the light of the TRA’s decision with regard to the extension of the ‘My Number, My Identity’ campaign, we are pleased to extend the registration period for the first batch of our customers which was supposed to expire on October 16, by a period of three months until January 17, 2013.”
The telecom operator also requested customers who haven’t received SMS notifications not to proceed to register until they receive one. Etisalat had earlier announced that mobile users on their network would not be disconnected on October 16 even if customers failed to re-register their SIM cards.
If registration is not done, initially, all outgoing calls from the mobile will be barred. Network providers will give a grace period of three months, after which the number will be cancelled completely.
