DSF a melting pot of cultures

DUBAI — The details of the calendar of events for the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) 2005 were announced at a gala function here yesterday.

The announcement was made by Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, Chairman of the Emirates Group and Chairman of DSF's Supreme Committee, in the presence of Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan, DSF sponsors, members of the Organising Committee and the local media.

Announcing the event, Shaikh Ahmed said: "I am proud to say that the festival, now in its first decade, has become the ultimate shopping, winning and entertaining event. Today, the DSF is a melting pot of cultures where people from all over the world come together as a family and enjoy the fruits of success planted by the late president, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan," he said.

Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, invited Mr Bachchan to unveil a beautiful 22 carat tenth DSF Celebration Special Gold Coin symbolising family, world-class entertainment and shopping to commemorate this year's festivities.

Praising the efforts made by the government of Dubai in making the DSF a global brand, Mr Bachchan said: "I give all credit to the organisers of the DSF who through their sincere efforts have made Dubai a success story. The DSF becomes bigger and better every year and I am amazed by the wonder of this beautiful city. Once again, it is wonderful to be here."

Speaking on the occasion Ibrahim Saleh, Chief Operations Officer DSF, thanked Shaikh Ahmed for his untiring contribution in supporting the causes of the DSF from the beginning.

The Organising Committee unveiled the 10 Destinations of the Calendar of Events, which is specially designed for the 10th year celebrations. The first being the Global Village in its new locations at Dubailand on Emirates Road which runs for 79 days until March 31. The new facility includes more than 45 pavilions and a food court with more than 50 restaurants, four main cafes and more than 75 kiosks for retailers. A unique feature of the new Village is an amphitheatre with a 6,000-seat capacity and a man-made lake with a total area of 4,000 sq mt built around the cafes. The major attraction here will be the daily light and sound musical shows conducted with the help of the water fountains throughout the evenings. To avoid overcrowding, six new entrance and exits and a 15,000 capacity car park is built for the convenience of the visitors.

The second destination is the Al Shindagah Zone Events where the visitors will get a chance to know more about the UAE and the region's Heritage and Culture while the third destination includes the colourful Dubai Carnivals, which will bring the various DSF venues alive with entertaining activities. The fourth major destination for the visitors from the region is the annual Night Souq offering unbeatable prices for shoppers at the leisurely hours of the evening. The Desert Camp, known for its traditional activities, forms part of the fifth destination while it's going to be prizes galore at the sixth destination, which includes raffles offering huge amounts of cash, gold and cars. This particular destination is slated to change a lot of people's lives.

The seventh destination is Public Parks which have various interesting activities for all age groups and nationalities while the eighth, nine and tenth destinations are represented through three main street venues like Al Seef, Al Riqqa and Al Muraqabbat which will have street performances, funfairs, sports competitions and many other exciting attractions.

This DSF will also see 100 kilos of gold being awarded to one winner, the biggest ever gold prize in the world, besides the five kilos of gold given away weekly and the daily one kilo gold prizes.
