Streets and infrastructure in three cities suffer extensive damage as Israeli forces dig up roads and destroy houses
Mohammed Ahmed Al Zarouni, Managing Director of the ANT Specialised Media Group, told Khaleej Times that the campaign, which will last until December 30, is the first to be held in the UAE with the aim of inculcating into students’ minds the advantages of quitting smoking and warning them of the fatal consequences of smoking.
“In the past few years, smoking rates among school students in the UAE had increased to an alarming point. The increase in the number of smokers is partly attributed to the teenage phase. All adult smokers started smoking as teenagers and a very few people picked up the habit as adults,” he said, praising Dubai Municipality's smoking ban in shopping malls.
Amer Ibrahim, Marketing Manager of the Media Group, said: “We have started printing more than 1.5 million booklets that will be distributed among all the private and public schools in the UAE and among shoppers at various shopping malls. The pamphlets will feature comprehensive information about the fatal consequences of smoking supported with recent relevant statistics.”
“The students will also be given a chance to take part in a competition where they will have to write their personal views about smoking. The student with the most impressive remark will be presented with a gift offered by one of the sponsors of the event,” he added.
Stressing on the poisonous impact of cigarettes, Ibrahim said: “Napthalene is one of the cigarette components and is mainly used in bombs and other explosive materials, polonium is a radioactive metallic element, methane is well known as the gas of swamps, and methanol is used for fuel industry. By taking a glimpse at the basic elements of a cigarette, people should think twice before smoking. Cigarettes are doing nothing to people but killing them slowly.”
Al Zarouni added: “During this awareness drive, we want to warn teenagers of becoming addicts to smoking. We also want to inform them that they should not trust and get persuaded by any advertisement and that they should put their health into consideration before thinking giving in to temptation.”
According to Al Zarouni, part of the campaign's revenues will be donated to various charity associations. The campaign will feature a 24-hour marathon that will be held at 4pm on November 24 to encourage smokers to quit smoking.
The campaign will also feature monetary awards worth Dh500,000, also featuring Opirus car 2004. Awards will be given to the best participating emirate and best educational zone. As many as 30 prizes will be given to the best participating schools and best teachers. A cash prize of Dh5,000 has been allocated for the best Press coverage, and another Dh5,000 for the best television coverage.
