Draft Anti-tobacco Law Hailed

ABU DHABI - The draft anti-tobacco law, which was approved by the Federal National Council (FNC) on Tuesday, is an achievement of the federal government and the House, First Deputy Speaker of the FNC, Ahmed bin Shabib Al Dhahiri, told Khaleej Times.

“The government had interacted with the Council, though it reserved ban on planting and processing tobacco, as it will have a socio-economic impact on business activities,” he said.

The government,he said,responded to the call and demands of the members of the Council to safeguard public health and protect it from smoking and its hazards.

“The penalties the law stipulates, which amount to as many as two years in jail and Dh1 million fine, are sufficient deterrent against whoever plant, process or import tobacco to the country,” he said.

“The law ensures the health of teenagers by banning smoking inside cars in which children under 12 are travelling,” Rasmi Gasim, an engineer by profession, said.

Gasim said that the lawbans sale of tobacco or tobacco-related products to those under 18, and the seller shall have the right to ask the buyer to prove that he is over 18.
