Don't scrap inspection dept., please

IS THE Ministry of Education planning to scrap the posts of inspectors? Well, indications are that the ministry could be seriously considering it, particularly if one were to go by the rumours doing the rounds that the inspector would be excluded from the special cadre announced by the ministry recently to develop the educational process in the country.

We sincerely hope the ministry doesn't take such a step.

Inspection has virtually become indispensable for the education system, be it teaching or administration.

The students, for obvious reasons, are not in a position to evaluate the teachers' performance or for that matter, other administrative issues. It is here that inspection plays an important role, that of a neutral judge. This function of the ministry is very important to maintain the standard of education, besides ensuring effective administration in schools all over the country.

Quality cannot be maintained unless there is some mechanism to ensure checks and balances, and it is here that the inspectors play a crucial role.
