“For centuries mental disorders across all cultures have been considered as taboo and topics that are not for discussion. Persons suffering from mental illness risk social alienation, loss of job and estrangement from relatives and friends,” lamented Shaikh Nahyan, while addressing an international psychiatry conference yesterday.

Organised by Al Noor Hospital in association with the Ministry of Health and the Health Authority, Abu Dhabi, the three-day conference is being attended by more than 400 experts.

Under the slogan, “Psychiatry in General Practice..Healthy Minds..Healthy Lives”, the conference is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Nahyan.

“We recognise the serious burdens of mental diseases on patients and their families as well as health care providers. Therefore, prevention and treatment strategies must address these barriers and further motivate people to learn about mental illnesses,” said Shaikh Nahyan.

Meanwhile, an exhibition showcasing medications for mental problems available in the UAE, was inaugurated by Shaikh Nahyan yesterday on the sidelines of the conference.
