"This conference is a valuable new addition to the line up of medical events and a scientific resource for the latest developments in the field of dermatology. It will help us utilise advancements in medical science for the benefit of the people of our region and humanity in general," Mr Mroushid said in his opening speech in which he welcomed participants to Dubai Derma 2004.

He said that it is the responsibility of medical practitioners to keep up with the accelerated pace of development in medical science in order to develop a high level of quality services.

"To continue holding such scientific meetings is necessary in order to learn and share scientific expertise to keep up with the fast pace of development," Mr Mroushid said, adding that the UAE has given such events great attention in keeping with the instructions of the country's wise leadership and out of a firm belief on the need to maintain a strong link with international institutions in order to update medical practitioners' knowledge and skills.

Professor Lawrence Parish, President of the International Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology (AICD), one of the sponsors of Dubai Derma, said in his speech that the IACD promotes the concept of cosmetic and aesthetic dermatology.

"The IACD provides a forum for physicians interested in having their patients "lookin' good". The academy also creates an exchange between dermatologists and members of the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry," Prof. Parish said.

Dr Ibrahim Galadari, Chairman of Dubai Derma 2004, welcomed participants to Dubai Derma 2004.

"In addition to this conference we have eight workshops for interested doctors, which include live demonstrations of hair transplants, mesotherapy, skin fillers, botox and laser therapy," Dr Galadari said.

On Tuesday's lectures included a talk on the active ingredients in cosmetic preparations given by Dr Medhat Abdel Malik from Jordan, a lecture on the changing pattern of skin disease by Dr Omeish Yousef Omeish from the Jordan Laser Centre, Amman, and a talk on skin depigmentation delivered by Dr Abdullah Al Eisa from Saudi Arabia.
